Blog anniversary Q&A!

It’s officially been two years since I first created my own little corner here on the Internet. Woah, time certainly flies. Anyone here who’s been following my blog since its early days as The Backwards Bookshelf? What about when I rebranded to Your Tita Kate?

One of the ways I thought I’d celebrate two years of being a book blogger was to host a Q&A, and here it is! I grouped all similar questions together so if you don’t see your specific question, it may be grouped in with another that has the same answer.

Enjoy!

1) When did you realise you were a bookworm, and how?

Oh gosh, wow. You know, I never really thought about this. I’ve been a bookworm for as long as I can remember. There’s literally never been a time where I didn’t like reading. From picture books when I was a toddler (and my mom has a hilarious story of me learning to read on my own out of sheer impatience because I couldn’t wait for her to get home from work to read to me) to the first Harry Potter book when I was 6 years old, books have always been my companions. I went through it all: classic readers from school, Sweet Valley, the Princess Diaries collection, the Lemony Snicket books, the YA boom in the 2010s, and so on and so forth.

2) If you weren’t a reader, what hobby would fill up most of your time?

Makeup, probably. Or cooking! I mean, I enjoy both very much. And they’re both necessities in my life. But I feel like I’d be more adventurous and/or exploratory with my makeup looks or my cooking if my time wasn’t all taken up by books and writing. 😅

3) Do you have a personalised rating system for books?

It’s not a personalised one, unfortunately! The only difference between my rating system and the Goodreads rating system is that I rate in increments of 0.5! My lowest rating is a 1, and my highest is a 5.

(Additional reading: Rating System & Review Policy)

4) Favourite bloggers?

Ooh, boy. Buckle up, I’ve got quite a list for you!

This is by no means an exhaustive list though!

5) Biggest pet peeves that other bloggers do?

I only really have one thing I dislike that bloggers do, but I guess I wouldn’t even really call it a pet peeve? I really, really hate it when book bloggers aren’t critical of the books they’re reading – some allowances given for age and accessible information, of course. But I really can’t stand it when book bloggers outright refuse to be critical of the media they consume, or insist on “separating the art from the artist”.

6) Who is your favourite Filipino author?

I can’t possibly answer just one! 😅

Of course there’s Rin Chupeco and Gail D. Villanueva, Randy Ribay, K.S. Villoso, and Marie Cruz. Janella Angeles is a new favourite. There’s also Mina V. Esguerra, Carla De Guzman, Tara Frejas, and Ana Tejano. I also like some classics like Nick Joaquin and F.H. Batacan!

7) What’s your favourite book mail you’ve ever gotten?

It’s a toss-up between the arrival of my pre-order of The Never-Tilting World by Rin Chupeco and my ARC of Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles!

8) Is there something you’d like to accomplish for your blog in 2020?

Speaking in numbers, I’d like to get to 1,000 subscribers (so please subscribe to my blog if you haven’t yet!). Other than that though, I’d like to engage more and reply to all the comments I get (so if you left a comment some time in January and suddenly get a notification from me in April, please don’t freak – it’s just me catching up to all the comments, lol). I also want to be able to review most of the books I read in 2020 (I know that reviewing them all is not a goal that I’ll likely accomplish 🤣) and write more discussion posts!

(Additional reading: 2020 Blogging Goals + Looking Back at 2019’s Goals)

9) Can you tell us more about your WIP?

I have several (lol) but the one I’m currently working on (and which is at 14k words now!  Officially the most I’ve ever written!) is kinda like Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Logan. It heavily features Filipino mythology and terminology and I’m super proud of it. Here’s to hoping I can finally finish a first draft!

10) What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned as a book blogger/booktuber?

Time management, for sure. I am in utter awe of everyone who manages to run a book blog or booktube along with a full-time job. When I started out, I wasn’t sure I could do it. True enough, there were some moments where one or the other suffered, but I like to think I’ve found a really happy medium between my content creation and my real life obligations.

One of these days, I’m going to write a post about that. When I find the time. 🤣

11) What is a book that everyone should read?

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Not only is this a timeless, vivid story, it also opens with, in my humble opinion, the absolute best first line in the history of literature, ever:

All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

12) If I saw [a book character] walking towards me, I’d cross the street. Who is the book character?

To be honest, I already cross the street to avoid white men in real life, so I’d probably do the same thing for book characters. 🤷🏽

13) What is a book that shaped who you are today?

I have three! The Giver by Lois Lowry, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.

14) What is your favourite book of all time?

Oh my God, I can’t answer this question. I really can’t. 🤣 For a comprehensive list of my favourites, you can check out my All Time Favourites shelf on Goodreads!

15) If I was a tiny speck sized person trapped inside your bowl of cereal what would happen to me?

I saved the weirdest question for last. 🤣 Hello, anon. I’d really like to know what you were thinking when you sent this question. Anyway, if you managed to catch my attention, of course I’d save your life and return you to your home. However, if you didn’t, as we say here in the Philippines – pasensyahan na lang. 😅

  5. HAPPY HAPPY BLOGIVERSARY KATE!! AHHH!!

It’s so exciting to see how much we’ve grown, and I still remember the days when we both had our old themes. 😂 I hope you know you’re one of my favorite bloggers too!! and YES I agree with the pet peeve. It gets boring when people aren’t critical of the books they read. (I mean you don’t have to roast it but give us some DEPTH) I’m definitely more motivated now to read Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina after reading Anna K: A Love Story so this is def the push I need.

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!! 💖I can’t wait for more amazing content in 2020!!
