Top Ten Favorite Romance Books – By Black Authors!

Hey there friends and comrades! This post is coming a bit late, but I had a super busy weekend. I hope everyone was able to have a great Valentine’s Day celebration with their friends, loved ones, significant others, or even by themselves. ❤️

And to help everyone maintain the romantic mood even after February 14 has come and gone – as well as celebrate Black History Month! – I’d like to talk about my top ten favourite romance books by Black authors! This post is a good mix of other genres as well as age ranges so I think there’s something for every reader on here.

Keep reading to find out what’s on my list!

  • I Think I Might Love You by Christina C. JonesThis lovely novella was introduced to me by Bee @ BeeWitched Books (check out their blog here or their YouTube here!). They mention it in a video where they talk about some Black romances they’re eager to read and the synopsis captured my attention. This was a wonderfully light and absolutely hilarious romance. I had such a good time reading this and it just put me in such a good mood!
  • Captured by Beverly Jenkins – PIRATE ROMANCE IS WHERE IT’S AT. And this one is delightfully steamy and thought-provoking. So far, it’s the only Beverly Jenkins book I’ve ever read (I know, shame on me) but I adored it and I can’t wait to read more from this honest-to-goodness queen!
  • Awakening by Rebel Miller – I’m a big fan of sci-fi set in space, and this one, featuring a caste-based dystopia, hit all the right spots. I’m normally not into love triangles but this is one of the few books I’ve read that just absolutely make it work.
  • The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert – This was the first Talia Hibbert book I ever read, and from here I was immediately sold on her books. I’ve read a whole bunch more but this one will always have a special place in my heart just because of how much I love the main character, Cherry Neita. Fake dating with a strong badass heroine plus a royal romance? Uh, YES PLEASE.
  • Sweet on the Greek by Talia Hibbert – Another Talia Hibbert title that made it to my top ten list, this one is also about fake dating (can you tell I adore the trope? Lol!) involving a football player who needs a fake girlfriend to ward off his adoring fans. The heroine, Aria Granger, is all kinds of awesome and kickass, and I adore every inch of her tattooed bad self.
  • Rafe: A Buff Male Nanny by Rebekah Weatherspoon – I love a romance that turns gender roles around, and this one – featuring a hot single mom who’s also the youngest surgeon in her state plus a bike-riding, buff, tattooed male nanny – is right up my alley.
  • A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole – Funnily enough, the first book of Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series was the last one I read! I just finished this book as part of my TBR for Black History Month and was utterly blown away. It was so nice to finally have context for the friendship between Ledi, Portia, and Nya. I also really adored Ledi and Thabiso’s chemistry! This modern-day fairy tale is the perfect  (in-joke, because Ledi is a scientist, lol). This modern-day fairy tale is the perfect read if you like your HEAs spicy and scientific!
  • A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole – The first Alyssa Cole book I ever read holds a very special place in my heart because I just freaking adore Portia. If you’re into age difference romance where the younger heroine gives the older hero a piece of her mind and a run for his money, definitely pick up this one. Did I mention there are swords?
  • A Prince on Paper by Alyssa Cole – Possibly my favorite Alyssa Cole read ever, this one features a fake dating for the press romance, a character coming out as nonbinary (and their family being totally loving and supportive), and the main character Nya turning her back on a toxic family member – which is something we need to see more of in romance, methinks! (Read my review here.)

And my absolute most favourite romance by a Black author ever is…

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo is the intensely moving story of a teen mother finding an identity of herself beyond being a mom, chasing her dreams nonstop, and navigating life to the best of her ability. It’s a uniquely and proudly Boricuan read and, at its very core, is a story all about love. Not just main character Emoni’s love for her best friend, her grandmother, or her daughter, but her love of cooking, her love for herself, and of course, her love for the new man in her life. This isn’t just a happy ending – it’s a hopeful one.

  1. I did not know with the fire on high was a romance! I gotta get to that book. A Princess In Theory is honestly a work of genius imo. So feminist and the way she discusses privilege in the workplace *chef’s kiss* You should read Destiny’s Captive by Beverly Jenkins. It’s got a afro-latinx pirate lady.
