[Top Ten Tuesday] Most Anticipated Releases for April, May, and June 2019

THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE YEAR IS OVER, Y’ALL. CAN YOU BELIEVE? I don’t know about y’all but I personally feel like the first three months of the year just flew by so fast.

With a new quarter, inevitably, comes a new wave of releases. And with a new wave of releases comes a brand new pile of books to add to my never-ending TBR! Ah, the life of a bookworm.

As I did with my Most Anticipated Releases for January, February, and March post, I decided to make this post part of my Top Ten Tuesday series. As you all probably know by now, Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly theme created by The Broke and The Bookish in 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in 2018. Today’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is books on your spring TBR, so my list fits in perfectly!

Check it out below!

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He – Y’AAAAAAAAAAAAALL. There are no words for how excited I am for this book. I read and finsihed my ARC (and will be publishing a review soon!) but check out that gorgeous cover! There’s no way I won’t be getting a copy of my own!

The Tiger at Midnight by Swati Teerdhala – Listen, I’m SO THERE for POC assassins. Always have been. And the trope of an anti-regime assassin falling for someone loyal to the ruler? The pain and conflict? YAS, KWEEN. Also, that cover is everything!

Starworld by Audrey Coulthurst – In this book, two lonely, isolated girls accidentally exchange phone numbers and end up roleplaying in a make-believe universe they call Starworld. This is either going to be a saphhic romance OR a female friendship book – but either way I’m here for it!

We Rule the Night by Claire Eliza Bartlett – Two girls with magical abilities find themselves in a bind when they’re press-ganged into joining an elite team of female fighter pilots. All I can say is, if this isn’t gay, it’s fake.

Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston – Mostly because JM has been screaming about this book since he got his ARC, and y’all know I trust his judgment. 😂

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal – Again, much thank you to JM for this ARC! (Most of my ARCs seem to come from either him, Shealea, or Bianca. Aaahhh, my angels.) This magical quest set in a world inspired by ancient Arabia is a must-read for anyone who calls themselves a fantasy fan.

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang – I didn’t think a mail-order bride novel was something I’d want to read, but considering this one is own voices, I figured, why not give it a try?

The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang – Okay, so. I have literally been here for this series since the great is-this-YA-or-not debacle of 2018, and I absolutely fell in love with the first book, The Poppy War (click to read my review!). If I don’t get my hands on an ARC of The Dragon Republic, I will legitimately maill myself to the publisher and scream the house down.

The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad – Djinn. In a city along the silk road. Fiercely independent women. How is this not on everyone’s TBR, is what I’d like to know!

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo – I’ve been trying to read a little more contemporary fiction, and this is one I’m particularly excited for. A single mother, an f/f romance, and Afro-Latinx culture and characters? Yas, henny.

Love from A to Z by S.K. Ali – I don’t even care what the plot is. A book with this gorgeous a cover, plus a hijabi on it, deserves to be read!

There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon – The queen of Indian-American contemporary YA is at it again with this book about a plus-size (!!!) heroine navigating love, life, and high school on her own terms. Featuring Ashish Patel, Rishi’s brother from When Dimple Met Rishi!

Girl Gone Viral by Arvin Ahmadi – I’ll be honest. Arvin Ahmadi’s interactions with Penguin and Sabaa Tahir on Twitter are the main reason this book got on my radar. But now that I’ve read the synopsis and discovered this features girls in STEM, coding, hacking, and virtual reality, I know this is something I’m definitely gonna enjoy!

Naturally Tan by Tan France – The lord of the gays Tan France’s memoir is a must-read for any fan of Queer Eye! Or basically anyone who wants to read about a fabulous, self-assured brown Muslim gay man!

Wicked Fox by Kat Cho – I’ll admit I’m not crazy about the cover, but come on! A YA romance novel about gumiho? This is something I’ve been wanting for forever! I watched My Girlfriend is a Gumiho when I was in high school, ya know.

Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon by Mary Fan – I first read Mary Fan’s sci-fi novel, Starswept, a couple of weeks ago (it’s free on Amazon until March 24!) and absolutely fell in love with it. So when Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon began making the rounds on social media, I just knew I had to add this to my TBR!

Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim – Roselle’s debut novel is everything I want in life: cute, heartwarming, family-oriented, discusses the Asian diaspora, and is chock-full of RECIPES.

Hungry Hearts: 13 Tales of Food & Love edited by Elsie Chapman – I’LL BE GETTING AN ARC AND I CANNOT STOP YELLING!!!!!!

Sooooo…that ended up not being 10 books at all. 😅 But hey, it’s not my fault this quarter is full of great releases!

Lmaoooo Kateee I don’t think Simon is going to give me an arc of Hungry Hearts at this point and yes I’m a little SALTY but it’s okay I’ll try and obtain a copy somehow!! ❤ ❤

  2. I’m so very excited for both Red, White & Royal Blue and Hungry Hearts! They match my (hopefully) gloriously happy-go-lucky April and May mood. My heart is already full with affection when I think about them. I’m ready for the cuteness and deliciousness. ❤

    • All the reviews I’ve reqad of RWRB and HH talk about how hope is such a central theme, so I think it’s definitely right up your alley for a gloriously happy-go-lucky April and May!

  3. Most of these are on my TBR, which is crying for mercy. My bank balance is saying ‘WAIT NO MORE’ but my heart is going ‘ALL THE BOOKS’ and your lists are not helping, Kate.

(Also one thing I am looking forward to in April – meeting you and Shealea!)

  6. It’s the first time I hear about The Tiget At Midnight and it sounds so interesting! and that cover…. I was lucky enought to get an ARC of Red, White & Royal Blue and I loved it so much IDK how I’ll manage to write a comprehensible review. There’s never been a period where I had more anticipated releases than this spring so I’ve been requesting books like crazy at my library.

      Things to remember:
      2) Forgive yourself if you need to take your time or take breaks.
      3) Read something lighthearted after.
      4) Stay hydrated. Because you’ll be crying. A lot.

  8. YESSSS I love all these books on your list!
Your comment regarding The Bride’s Test really struck me. I didn’t think I’d ever feel like I’d want to read a story about a mail-bride either because being in an interracial relationship, I feel like I have to grapple with being perceived as one. So I think The Bride’s Test will help me work through those feelings because I’m really ignorant to what mail-brides experience and all that.
