[Top Ten Tuesday] Favorite Couples in Books

Morning, comrades! Welcome to my third installment of Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly theme created The Broke and The Bookish in 2010 and moved to The Artsy Reader Girl in 2018.

For today, I’ll be talking about my top favorite couples in books in preparation for February 14, Valentine’s Day! And because I am super extra, I also included an aesthetic for each couple!

(I’ll also be posting a list of my favorite romance books on Valentine’s Day itself, so keep an eye out for it!)

The couples I picked out for this list are all explicitly canon couples. I wondered if I should include some of my fave ships, but then I figured if I started including non-canon couples, this list would go on forever and ever and ever. (Holla at me, Drarry fans!)

Check out my favorite bookish couples below!

Kaz Brekker & Inej Ghafa – Six of Crows Duology

Kaz and Inej

What’s there left to say about Kaz and Inej? “I would have come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.” *SCREAMS*

Henri & Athene – The Oremere Chronicles

Henri and Athene

I live for leader + second-in-command romances, y’all. And this one between the Queen of the Valia and her lieutenant fits the bill nicely. To add to that, there’s a theme of conflict involving Athene’s daughter hinted at towards the end of the second book Reign of Mist. I can’t wait for the conclusion to this trilogy, War of Mist, so I can finally find out what happens!

Amun & Mehr – Empire of Sand

Amun and Mehr

Sacrifice will always be a major feels trip for any romance, and Amun and Mehr’s relationship is practically the poster child for this. Learning to love each other alongside surviving under tyrannical rule was a ride and a half, and one that tugs at your heartstrings in the absolute best way.

Lei and Wren – Girls of Paper and Fire

Lei and Wren

Speaking of learning to love each other alongside surviving under tyrannical rule! Lei and Wren are the fantasy f/f romance of my dreams, y’all. Plus, this couple shows us the flip side of the chosen one + ordinary person who gets caught up in the shenanigans romance!

Kell Maresh & Lila Bard – A Darker Shade of Magic

Kell Maresh and Lila Bard

STOP FUCKING WITH THE SHIP. And that’s all I have to say about this couple.

Alina Starkov & her powers – The Grisha Trilogy

Alina nad her powers(1)

Mal is an abusive piece of white bread who couldn’t deal with his girlfriend being more powerful than he is. The Darkling was an abusive piece of white bread who literally put a collar on Alina. Nikolai was only less scuzzy than either of them, but still wanted to use Alina for his own purposes. Therefore the only good ending to this trilogy would have been for Alina to learn how to live and be happy on her own with her sun summoning abilities.

James Potter & Lily Evans – Harry Potter

James Potter and Lily Evans(2)

The OG true love couple! Severus Snape was trash and deserved to die alone, thanks.

post divider 2

Tavish McKenzie & Portia Hobbs – A Duke by Default

Portia and Tavish

#Swordbae for life, y’all!

post divider 2

Pio Alvez & Audrey Alonzo – Like Nobody’s Watching

Pio and Audrey

The couple that got me into romance as a genre! Also, Pio Alvez, that utter sweetheart who respects Audrey’s boundaries, totally set the bar for love interests – just saying!

post divider 2

Steve Rogers & Tony Stark – Marvel

Steve and Tony

The original superhusbands. It’s canon, y’all. It is so canon that the first thing Marvel did when they genderbent Tony Stark and turned him into a woman was have him marry Steve Rogers. Girl, bye.

  1. Eeeh I love the aesthetics you made, Kate!

Empire of Sand is amazing. Amir and Mehr’s relationship is so fucking healthy, I cried. I loved reading about how they built trust, and pretty much flipped the tables on the whole arranged marriage trope. Damn, this makes me want to re-read Empire all over again!

Henri and Athene 💕 Can they please have their happy ending already!

Your comment on The Grisha trilogy has got me interested! I’ll need to check it out!

    • The Grisha Trilogy was not Leigh Bardugo’s best work, I’ll admit. The ending is SUPER polarizing, imho. But it’s still a pretty good book and has some really excellent world-building!

Also, HENRI AND ATHENE NEED TO BE HAPPY W/O ANY DRAMA PLEASE!!! 😭

  3. I love this post Kate! I also had Kaz and Inej and Kell and Lila in my TTT post for this week because I just love them together. I wish I’d thought to put Tony and Steve in my post! I totally ship them together and I wish they’d make it canon in the films 😛 You’re right though, totally canon in the comics. Great post!
